21st Pennsylvania Cavalry
Hailing from the south-central region of the state, the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry was forged during the Gettysburg Campaign in the third summer of the Civil War. Its charismatic officers included William H. Boyd and Oliver B. Knowles, who had honed their fighting prowess earlier in the war against fearsome Confederate tacticians John Mosby and John Imboden. The regiment’s war record was dynamic and arduous, including service under Meade and Grant at Cold Harbor as infantry and making the last charge at Appomattox Court House as cavalry. After the war, veterans continued to honor their comrades, and two monuments were erected at Gettysburg to commemorate the regiment’s proud service. ~ Britt Charles Isenberg

78th & 102nd New York Infantry Regiments

The monument to the 78th and 102nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiments is southeast of Gettysburg on Slocum Avenue. It was dedicated by the State of New York in 1888.
The 78th New York Infantry was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Von Hammerstein. It brought 198 men to the field, losing 6 killed, 21 wounded and 3 missing.
The 102nd New York Infantry was commanded at Gettysburg by Colonel James C. Lane. He was wounded on July 2, and Captain Lewis R. Stegman took command. The 102nd brought 248 men to the field, losing 4 killed, 17 wounded and 8 missing.
The regiments fought side by side throughout the war and were consolidated into one unit in July of 1864 due to casualties. ~ stonesentinels.com

2nd Maryland Infantry
“1st Maryland Infantry Battalion”
The monument to the Confederate 2nd Maryland Infantry is southeast of Gettysburg on Culp’s Hill. A marker showing the extent of the advance of the battalion is a short distance to the west in the saddle between upper and lower Culp’s Hill.
This was the first Confederate monument on the battlefield and met a great deal of resistance from the battlefield commission authorities. It was finally allowed to be erected and was dedicated in 1884. But the commission required it to be designated as the “2nd Maryland Infantry” even though the unit was known as the First Maryland Battalion at the time of the battle.
The reason given was there were already two Union regiments designated as the First Maryland (First Maryland Potomac Home Brigade and First Maryland Eastern Shore), and the Confederate 1st Maryland Battalion had been redesignated as the Second Maryland Regiment in 1864. So the monument was erected to the “2nd MD. INFANTRY C.S.A.” But a close examination of the monument just above the unit designation shows an unofficial but professionally carved correction. The position marker refers to the “1st MD. BATTALION C.S.A.”
The battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Herbert until he was wounded on July 2nd. Major William Goldsborough then took over until he, too was wounded. Captain Murray having been killed, Captain Torsch then briefly led the battalion until relieved by Captain James P. Crane. The battalion brought 400 men to the field in eight companies, losing 56 killed, 118 wounded and 15 missing.
There is no better example of a state caught between two sides than what occurred at Culp’s Hill, where the Union 1st Maryland Eastern Shore faced the Confederate 1st Maryland Battalion. Color Sergeant Robert Ross of the Union regiment was a cousin to Color Sergeant P.M. Moore of the Confederate battalion, who was wounded several times and captured by his neighbors.

15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment

15th REG. MASS. VOLS.
Here, Sept. 17th, 1862, the Fifteenth Reg. Mass.
Volunteers, with the First Company Andrew Sharpshooters
attached, 606 men of all ranks, commanded by
Lieut. Col. John W. Kimball, Gorman’s Brigade
Sedgwick’s Division, Second Army Corps
met and engaged troops of the Brigades of 
Semmes, Early and Barksdale.
Within twenty minutes 330 had fallen, 75 killed
and 255 wounded, 43 dying of wounds.
